Breast Cancer Information
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women in Ireland. Sláinte an Chláir, Clare Cancer Support is committed to raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and supporting those who have been diagnosed.
Symptoms of Breast Cancer
Early detection is vital in improving outcomes. The following symptoms should be checked by your doctor without delay:
- A lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm area
- A change in the size or shape of the breast
- Dimpling or puckering of the skin on the breast
- A nipple turned inward (inverted) into the breast
- Discharge from the nipple, especially if bloody
- Scaly, red or swollen skin on the breast, nipple or areola
- Persistent pain in the breast or armpit
If you notice any changes in your breasts, it is important to visit your GP promptly. Most breast changes are not cancer, but early investigation is always recommended.
Treatment Options
Treatment for breast cancer depends on the type and stage of the disease. Your medical team will discuss the best options for your individual case. Common treatments include:
Surgery
Surgery is often the first treatment for breast cancer. This may involve a lumpectomy (removal of the tumour and a small margin of surrounding tissue) or a mastectomy (removal of the entire breast). Your surgeon will explain which approach is most appropriate based on the size and location of the cancer.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses anti-cancer drugs to destroy cancer cells. It may be given before surgery to shrink the tumour, or after surgery to reduce the risk of the cancer returning. Chemotherapy is usually given in cycles over several months.
Radiotherapy
Radiotherapy uses high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells in a targeted area. It is commonly used after surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence. Treatment is usually given daily over several weeks.
Hormone Therapy and Targeted Therapy
Depending on the type of breast cancer, hormone therapy or targeted biological therapies may also be recommended. These treatments work by blocking the signals that help cancer cells grow.
